A Safety Reminder in Machine Guarding

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) under United States Department of Labor issued a regulation regarding the general requirements for all machine under OSHA Standards – 29 CFR (1910.212). It states that “One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices, electronic safety devices, etc.”

Flexible safety shields are used on lathes, drills, small mills, grinders, band saws, or similar equipment including woodworking machines. The heavy-duty flexible arms are made of spring steel and covered with vinyl protecting them from grease, oil, and contaminants that could deteriorate their holding power. They offer virtually unlimited adjustment possibilities and long-term holding power.

Universal safety shields are best for mills, drills, grinders, band saws, or similar equipment including woodworking machines. A barrier is created by the shied between the machine and the operators or other employee in the vicinity of the area as well as the flying chips (swarf), sparks, and coolant generated from the tool.

Safety Switches are tamper-resistant and can be used to join hinged, sliding, or lift-off guards. Shutting of the guard or latch triggers the actuator to enter the switch and let go the dual ant tamper locking cams. The actuator permits the main center cam to turn and make the switch contacts. When opening the guard or latch, the actuator positively forces the contacts open due to the cam action built into the switch. Safety switches come in many designs and purposes depending on the uses.
