It is well known that it is not sufficient for a good ranking to just have an optimized website for the keywords. More important are links from other sites to your website. There are several types of links and it is always good to know a little bit about it.
If you find a site with witch you want to exchange links get in touch with the webmaster and offer him a link from your site. You get a backlink pointing from his site to your site if he agrees. Those links are reciprocal links or Two Way Links. Bear in mind to ask for a link from related sites, they are more important to Google. By the way a Two Way Link is not very important for a good position in Google, sure it is still better than no link. What Google likes are One Way Links. This is a link from another website to your site and there is no link from your website to the other site. You can get such links from web directories. But they contribute less and less to a high-quality ranking. One Way Links would be of course again the best of a competing site because they are very related. You sure have problems to find somebody who gives you a link for nothing in return.
You can proceed quite different if you have 2 partners, B and C. You (A) link to B and B links to C and not back to A. C gets a link from B and in return links to A. All are linked in a triangle: A -> B -> C -> A. Everyone gets an incoming link, but for which there is no direct outgoing link.
